Mayor Peduto, HACP, & Development Partners to Celebrate Opening of the Second Phase of Larimer/East Liberty Choice Neighborhood Housing

October 9, 2019

The City of Pittsburgh, Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh (HACP), co-developer McCormack Baron Salazar, and their development partners are very excited to announce the completion and opening of Phase II housing at the ongoing Choice Neighborhood Initiative redevelopment in Larimer and East Liberty. The new development, named Cornerstone Village, will be celebrated at a ribbon-cutting event on Thursday, October 10 at 2:00 p.m. The main ribbon-cutting will take place on the corner of Broad Street and Larimer Avenue, followed by a tour of the neighborhood.

“It’s an honor to celebrate the opening of more housing in Larimer,” said Mayor William Peduto. “The Choice Neighborhood Initiative is bringing innovative mixed-income housing and modern amenities to the Larimer community. Thanks to the efforts of community members and our partners, this initiative will not only strengthen the affordable housing supply in an area that needs it, but it will also improve residents’ quality of life and ensure that community members are included in any growth East Liberty experiences.”

Cornerstone Village Phase II includes 150 mixed-income units in 12 buildings, bolstering the neighborhood’s supply of quality mixed-income housing and providing residents with a range of housing options. The development has been built following the Enterprise Green Community Criteria, a stringent green rating system for mixed-income housing, making Cornerstone Village Phase II a prime example of what sustainable development can look like. Featuring tot lots, picnic benches, bike racks, and walking access to the East Liberty Transit Center, Cornerstone Village Phase II also provides residents access to rich social services and economic opportunity, facilitated by Urban Strategies, Inc.

This development is the second phase of housing in a larger Choice Neighborhood effort that, once completed, will produce 334 units of mixed-income housing plus improvements to the neighborhood infrastructure, economic opportunities and supportive services for residents. The Larimer/East Liberty Choice Neighborhood Initiative launched in 2014, following the award of a $30 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. With the goal of redeveloping the neighborhood comprehensively, HACP and its partners adopted a community-driven strategy to strengthen the foundations of a healthy community. This includes addressing issues such as affordable housing, recreational space, economic opportunity, education, public safety, and health and wellness.

“The Choice Neighborhood initiative is an example of what comprehensive, collaborative redevelopment efforts can look like,” said HACP Executive Director Caster D. Binion. “Together with community stakeholders and our development partners, we are truly transforming Larimer to address the community’s needs. Cornerstone Village Phase II is just one more step toward realizing the goal of a revitalized Larimer.”
